College Student Grief Awareness Day

College Student Grief Awareness Day - Monday, April 15, 2024

Attitudes & Emotions Life & Living

1 of 3 college students are grieving the death of a loved one or a loved one’s diagnosis of a terminal illness. The Actively Moving Forward (AMF) program is dedicated to supporting young adults grieving the illness or death of a loved one.

The peer-led program, currently active on almost 50 college campuses nationwide, connects and empowers grieving students to support one another and inspires them to “Actively Move Forward” with community service.

AMF has already supported over 3000 students on over 200 campuses throughout the United States. Our goal is to be an international movement, to empower students throughout the world that one can Actively Move Forward as a tool to healthy grief recovery.

College students are particularly vulnerable when stricken with grief. Chances are, most students have never experienced the death of a loved one. Now, they are away from home or leaving home, often for the first time and are away from their usual support systems.

Their peers don’t understand grief and therefore, these students don’t receive the empathy or support they need. With many college campuses having limited grief support resources available, these students are at high risk to a host of issues; a feeling of isolation; an inability to focus; a lack of energy; and depression.
