History of Raisin Bran Cereal Day

Raisin Bran, similar to Corn Flakes but with raisin and a much milder flavor, was originally made famous by Kellogg and General Mills. These two companies, however, weren’t the first to craft the cereal. Skinner’s, a brand that made the Raisin Bran cereal famous during the 1920’s, sued both of these companies when they both rebranded the cereal with their logos. Skinner’s originally had a monopoly on the cereal, but as these two companies reigned in, and over the next 20 years, the arguments over what small grocery stores would stock what cereal for consumers to have. Then, in 1944, the Supreme Court labeled raisin bran as a description of the ingredients in the cereal instead of a name created by a specific company, leaving the cereal without a trademark.

Today, companies like Skinner can use the raisin bran concept without any trademark conflict. Now, Kellogg’s, one of the major companies that have grown over the past decade, has raisin bran as a food option for consumers. Raisin Bran Cereal Day is a day that acknowledges the history of the raisin bran and the increase in popularity of cereal in general.
