Relationship Fun Love

National Boyfriend Day falls on October 3. It’s a day to let your boyfriend know how much he means to you. National Boyfriend Day reminds everyone with a boyfriend to take special notice of that special someone and how they make your life better.

History of National Boyfriend Day

We’re making 2020 the year that National Boyfriend Day official becomes a really big “thing!” As far as we can tell, this day is a totally internet-generated phenomenon. The first reference we found is mentioned as Boyfriend Day, probably dated October  4, 2014.  But the day seems to gain traction by March 2016 with over 46,000 tweets!

Although there’s no sole officially-credited source that initiated this important day, some smart person probably realized boyfriends didn’t have their own acknowledged day and came up with this great idea. And why not? Girlfriends have their own day!

National Girlfriends Day is celebrated every August 1. This day was launched as a promotional tool for a book by Kathleen Laing and Elizabeth Butterfield, “Girlfriends Getaway,” which was published in 2002.  For those who are new to Girlfriends Day, it’s a special day for hanging with your crew of ladies or, guys, doing something extra special for that favored lady in your life.  Celebrate with gifts, a special outing or just that quality time that means so much.

National Boyfriend Day is increasing in its popularity, not only domestically but around the world. Let’s keep this thing going so that great boyfriends get the love and appreciation they so richly deserve every year.

A dual celebration

As National Boyfriend Day was created due to the popularity of National Girlfriend Day, then it’s important to point out that National Girlfriend Day was originally created as a way for women to celebrate and hang out with their gal pals. The holiday’s purpose evolved over time and now it is seen as a dual celebration where people celebrate both their romantic girlfriends and also their platonic friendships too.

With that in mind, we suggest that National Boyfriend Day doesn’t have to be all about showing love and affection for your male romantic partner. You can be showing your appreciation for male pals too. So, even if you’re not anyones romantic boyfriend, it doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate National Boyfriend Day.

So my BOYFRIEND comes home last night absolutely smashed, gets undressed and then just stands there in my room. So I'm like are you coming to bed? And he goes "no thank you, I'm sure you're lovely but I have a girlfriend" and goes to sleep on the floor 😭😭😭

National Boyfriend Day Statistics

59% of people say online dating was a great way to meet people
In this new age, most of us are too busy to go out to meet new people, and others want to skip the scouting and go straight to the audition. Over half of the dating pool in the US agree that online dating is a great and convenient way to meet someone new. This is more than the 44% of people in 2005 who viewed online dating as an innovative way to cultivate new relationships.
56% of men want to discuss marriage after six months
If you’re in a relationship for half a year, odds are you want to be in that same relationship for the long run. In fact, over half of men and women start discussing marriage after six months of being together. Though six months doesn’t equate to the rest of your lives, for some people it’s a good amount of time to understand if you and your partner actually click, and if they’re someone you could see yourself getting old and wrinkly with.
83% of men prefer to make the first move
Men like to be wined and dined too, y’all! Though it’s engrained in our society that men must make the first move, some men want to feel desired too. But honestly, it’s 2020. Who cares who asked who out, as long as you have a good time together and value each other’s company.

National Boyfriend Day Activities

  1. Double your fun at the cost for one

Take advantage of a Groupon or other deal. That way you can check out a new restaurant or one you wouldn’t normally be able to afford. You'll save money but you won't skimp on fun!

  2. Show the world you're an awesome duo

Get a professional photo of both of you and make it sexy! Sometimes a selfie just won't do. You can still find reasonably priced studio photographers online.

  3. Roller skate like they did back in the day

Hit the rink on an 80s night and learn to skate backwards! Wear your shortest shorts and let your man know why you chose him. Then get your groove on.

Why We Celebrate National Boyfriend Day (Part 2)

  1. They try to put their best foot forward

Whether it’s picking you up for a date, fixing things around your apartment, or offering to pay for dinner, the best boyfriends try hard to make a good impression. They know relationships need work and effort, no matter how long you two have been together. So, show your man some love today!

  2. They’re your partner in crime

Everyone needs a “partner in crime” and boyfriends are usually up to the task. A great boyfriend doesn’t just listen to your stories — he makes himself an accomplice to the protagonist: you! Whether you need a buddy to go to the taco stand across the street or to travel halfway across the world, your boyfriend is always by your side, adding to your story. Thank you, boyfriends of the world, for always being there!

  3. They can keep a secret

Your boyfriend may not admit it, but he, too, gossips with his "boys." If you’ve got a burning secret, trust your boyfriend to lend a safe ear! Bonus: because you’re his sweetie, if you're in the middle of a dispute, you can "take it to the bank" that your boyfriend will always take your side!
